Just checking to see who has Joomla installed so far and who hasn’t. It would be good if this can be managed by the next meeting. If, however, there are still installation issues, let’s resolve them before the meeting. So who has and hasn’t gotta a handle on the latest Joomla as yet?

Two weeks and ready to go

Just took delivery of new ASUS desktop yesterday. Flat out like a lizard drinking getting linked hub up and running etc. Now that I have access to mainframe am prepared to have a go at Ratty again with Joomla. Sorry to be dragging the chain – but was nervous of that continual messaging etc. Not really a confident register re-arranger either!

You shouldn’t have any problems if you follow the installation instructions. Watch the video, read the book, all sounds tooooo easy. Any issues Sandra, just blog.

Am going to have a go at installing onto desktop. Seem to be going round in circles on the laptop. General messages seem to be ports full.

Just work through the XAMPP website. It has some uninstall instructions at near bottom of page. These may help you Sandra.

Don’t need to uninstall. I’ve got to the stage on video where looking for ’server’ to pull up. However, suspect I am looking at a different version of screen. Bearing in mind that I’m a journo/community activist and not IT – it takes a bit of time to understand exactly what I’m looking at! I think I’ve actually got it very close to working – certainly got a Joomla15 database created etc. Working on 2 new machines with Vista/07 as well as coordinating full on house renovations here also takes my focus off somewhat! But I’m getting there.

OK – got a bit further along here, still using laptop. Tried on desktop but couldn’t pull up local host page – got very strange messages on that process. Am I supposed to be using SQLyog (dolphin icon)? I do seem to have gone OK except when the video pulls up ’server’ I haven’t got the same screen. My feeling is Vista is exhibiting different setups. Probably gone about as far as my techy experience (or lack thereof!) can take me. However, feel if time can be spared – will not take long at next meeting. Apologies for delay etc.

The best thing to do is to read the XAMpp docs. Don’t worry about SQLyog as the XAMPP docs use phpMyadmin. Anyway, between all of us, we should be able to bring you up to speed quickly.

OK – many thanks Tim. I’m pretty sure I’ve got it there. Seem to have all right names etc. Installation is not my key experience. Once I have the Joomla server on there I should be OK. I tend to think Vista itself is also confusing me and in addition to working with a hub again – gggaaahhhhh!!!!! I had a read of some of the XAMPP docs and there seems to be a list of passwords for those items I had to leave as ‘insecure’ so as to avoid that continual messaging. The whole concept of setting up my own server took quite a lot of wrapping head around also. Fantastic learning experience though – really enjoying the exposure to new things – thanks for your patience!

No worries. I am glad that you have been able to resolve this yourself. A big pat on the back for your results!!

Thanks Tim. Hope I’ve got it – but pretty sure its there – just needs a bit of tweaking to get Joomla operating as such. I’m thinking it looks a bit different to me that’s all and my lack of knowledge base on this aspect of web work is the issue. However, the learning experience is excellent and I’ve always found the best way to understand for myself is to put it onto paper for others. Hence, I’m going to put together an info pack – similar format to the one I showed you on entering data content – but this one background/definitions and installation of XAMPP/Joomla. So that will keep me busy for a while!!!!! And hopefully we can make that available to others in time. So would really appreciate feedback as it progresses etc. Should be an interesting exercise!
